What is Ayurveda

Ayurveda

Attuning your body, mind and spirit through yoga, mindfulness and Ayurveda, can help bring greater harmony, peace and longevity.

What’s it Got to Do with Yoga?

You may have heard of Ayurveda during a yoga class and wondered what it was all about. They stem from the same philosophical roots and Ayurveda is often called Yoga’s sister science. Yoga is the science of self-realization and Ayurveda is the science of self-healing.  Each practice aims to help the individual achieve longevity, rejuvenation and self-realization, known as samadhi, the ultimate state of inner peace.

The Human Constitution

One of the many things that I love about Ayurveda is its recognition that we are all unique and there is not a one size fits all approach to our health and wellness. It sees the body as a complex machine that is a reflection of your state of mind.  Ever wonder why raw food doesn’t work for you? Or why some people are better at brainstorming and others with details? It can be influenced by your dosha, which refers to a bodily humor (or bio-energy center). In Sanskrit, dosha means “that which is at fault,” but they aren’t problems until imbalances have been in the body and mind for a while. These energies do good or ill, depending on whether they are in a relative state of balance. The three key doshas are known as Vata, Pitta and Kapha.  Each person is born with a specific constitution with varying percentages of these doshas that govern our body, mind and consciousness. Each dosha type has its own habit of thinking, feeling, and talking.
